I think I’m being pigeonholed with all this track… LOL! But lucky for me, as a former track runner, I love the sport and am happy to shoot it.
The University of Colorado hosted this year’s Big 12 Meet and it was really fun to shoot. I really like the shot of Billy Nelson coming out of the water pit as he runs the steeplechase because of the reflection of his foot. Also, I thought framing the disc thrower between the chain linked fence was an interesting approach to photographing the event. Lastly, CU won the meet and there were some really fun reaction shots at the end of the meet. My goal was to incorporate the highly recognizable flat irons into the shot because they are in a lot of ways an icon of this university.

Carey & Matthew got married in a beautiful, old, stone church perched on a hill in Cascade, CO. They went down the aisle barefoot to pay homage to their favorite saint, St. Francis of Assisi. It was a gorgeous May day with perfect blue skies and blooming cherry blossoms.
Carey & Matthew were wonderful to work with. They are a couple intensely in love and I actually had to stop them once or twice from locking lips reminding them they will want one or two photos of them looking at the camera.

I was assigned to go photograph the state track meet in Denver and I had been waiting all day for a Longmont girl to pole vault. Elizabeth Stover is the reigning state champ and comes into the event at heights well beyond her competition. I didn’t expect much reaction from her because the win was fairly easy and expected but she gave this nice little wave to the crowd after breaking her own state record. I really like the beautiful sky and her modest, relaxed wave.

Graduations are one of those events that rarely produce an interesting or new photo. Sure there is the fun shot of somebody cheering after receiving his/her diploma and lot’s of emotional hugging from friends and family after the ceremony.
I took this photo of a Sudanese refugee who took 6 years to complete his Associates degree. Hearing about all the trials and tribulations he had to overcome during his speech moved me. It’s not the typical graduation photo but interesting none the less.

I love so many things about being a photojournalist especially getting outside on a beautiful May day following around some high school kids as they pull out an invasive weed for a school project.

Bola Ibidunni is the owner of All Boards Sports in Boulder. He was painfully camera shy and insisted more than once that I should photograph one of the guys he had working for him. But he was the story and eventually warmed up to me.
We tried lot’s of different angles trying to come up with a way to show off the board and frame him. I thought the mute gray sky, off camera flash and unusual way he his holding the board made it an interesting portrait.

Even the most dismal of school gyms can produce interesting light. Patience and careful framing helped me make this photo.

I’ve been over to Longmont’s Centennial pool a few times now and have been struggling to get a good shot of the divers. Today I finally took a step back and tried something looser, something more graphic and I thought it worked out.

My good friends Stephanie and Rick had a very intimate but beautiful wedding in a Denver public park. They are such a wonderful couple and compliment each other to a tee. She wore a pale, pink Calvin Klein dress with matching flip flops (her signature shoe) and he wore a light gray suit with a tie that matched his brides gown. We had such a blast walking around taking portraits with the city as our backdrop.
