Pomp and Circumstance

May 30, 2009

High School graduations are always fun and interesting events to document. The emotion is so raw and full of excitement I sometimes find it hard to not get caught up in the moment myself as I reflect back on days long past.

Last week I had the privilege of making images at 5 graduations!! Jeffco Public Schools hired me for 4 graduations around the Denver area and the Longmont Times-Call had me head over to Erie High School. I don’t remember much about my high school graduation and sadly I doubt these graduates will appreciate the time and effort put into the day but now as an observer, with over 10 years between my green cap and gown, I see the day through much clearer eyes.

Even though the graduates are being released into the “Real World” as so-called adults they are still in many ways young, rambunctious, kids willing to act like fools and put on a good show for the crowd. This recipe equals fun photos every time.

Teddy Bear Clinic

This little boy was so darn cute and terribly concerned that his Tigger was going to be okay. The doctor gave him a good diagnosis.

Wet & Wild Football

September 11, 2008

Photographing night high school football is one of the more challenging events to shoot, throw in torrential rains and you’ve got one wicked and wet evening. I was shocked this woman and all of her children were braving the horrible weather- turns out she was the coaches wife. Talk about dedication!

Feature Hunting Football

August 28, 2008

Homecoming games are a great time to get something more than just the usual action football shots. I made these feature photos at Longmont High School’s homecoming game against Skyline.

60 Years and Still Going Strong

August 26, 2008

I had to go photograph the sweetest couple today celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary. Bob and Roberta Burkett met as children and said they new right away they would be together forever. Even after 60 years of marriage they were very flirty with each other, Roberta even gave Bob’s bum a little pat as we were changing locations! :) It is really wonderful- hopeful actually- to see people so in love after all that time. I love this photo of them. I feel like I really captured their story. I had been struggling to capture the right image, Roberta dropped her guard rested her head on Bob’s chest and bingo. I was done.

Ceramic Artist

August 23, 2008

Denver Woman magazine hired me to photograph Boulder artist Kim Dicky. She is an incredibly talented sculptor who makes these great organic, leafy pieces. Her workspace was a cramped, dark, dusty room with harsh yellow lighting so I brought her out by a window, used some of her tools as props and made a nice portrait.
